Threefold reduction in blindness prevalence in Qatar
The 2022/2023 modified RAAB in Qatar has shown a threefold reduction in blindness prevalence over the last decade.
Key findings:
- The prevalence of blindness has decreased from 1.28% in 2009, to 0.4% in 2022/2023 (presenting visual acuity < 3/60).
- Principal causes of blindness are diabetic retinopathy (33%), cataract (20%) and glaucoma (13%).
- Vision impairment is higher in females (12.6%) compared to males (7.6%).
The insights gained from the RAAB can be used to advocate for increased accessibility to public eye care services.
