Sociodemographic Factors and Eye Disease Knowledge in Afghanistan
This study assessed the sociodemographic determinants of knowledge regarding common eye diseases among adults in Herat province in Afghanistan. Key Findings:
- Approximately 76.8% of participants lacked sufficient knowledge about common eye diseases, with 79% unaware of the definition of glaucoma and only 15% correctly identifying diabetic retinopathy as a condition.
- About 51.3% of participants correctly identified cataracts, making it the most recognized eye condition.
- Individuals over 35 years were 3.62 times more likely to be aware of eye diseases compared to those aged 18-34. Higher education levels were also significantly associated with greater awareness.
The study concluded that enhancing awareness about routine eye examinations could significantly reduce both visual impairment and the overall expense of eye care.
