Fiji eliminates trachoma as a public health problem
Fiji has been validated by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for eliminating trachoma as a public health problem, making it the 26th country globally to achieve this milestone.
Since 2012, Fiji has conducted comprehensive surveys and studies to map the disease’s prevalence and implemented integrated health programmes combining school health initiatives, water and sanitation improvements and community awareness campaigns. The achievement is a result of years of coordinated action demonstrating the unwavering commitment of Fiji’s healthcare sector all together.
Fiji country joins six other countries in the Western Pacific Region – Cambodia, China, Laos, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and Vietnam; that have successfully eliminated trachoma.
