Access to community eye services in Meru, Kenya: a 2024 study
This study examined the sociodemographic factors influencing access to eye care services in Meru County in Kenya. Key Findings:
- Only 46% of individuals referred for eye care during community screenings were able to access treatment.
- Younger adults, males, and individuals employed in manual, sales, or service jobs had significantly lower access to eye care services.
- Age was the most significant factor influencing access, with those aged 18–44 years experiencing the lowest attendance rates.
The study highlighted that over 80% of blindness in Kenya is due to preventable causes, with approximately 7.5 million Kenyans needing eye services.
